Survived an assassination attempt while campaigning as the Progressive (Bull Moose) party candidate because of a steel eyeglass case. The bullet was still lodged in his chest when he spoke at a rally later that day.

He fought in the Spanish- American war as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Rough Riders. He fought in the charge going up Kettle Hill and received the medal of honor posthumously.
